Whoomp, There It Isn’t

Sometimes I get the feeling my kids just genuinely don’t understand me. Like, for instance…

Yesterday we were driving down the road in the mini-van and the timeless masterpiece,  ‘Whoomp! There It Is’ came on the radio. I got so excited, cranked up the volume, busted out some sweet front seat sit-dancing moves, recited as many lyrics as I could remember…then proceeded to reminisce about everything that ever happened to me in 10th grade when ‘Whoomp! There It Is’ was thee coolest song of all time.

Moments later I remembered that my kids were in the back seat. I looked back at them in the mirror and all three of them were just staring blankly at me as if I was some embarrassing mom, rambling on about her heyday, like an obnoxious teenager. I mean….

I turned the volume down and sank into my seat quietly. Awkward silence. Finally one of them made the connection that this was the song from the mail room in Elf. Which led to a 10 minute kid conversation about every hilarious bit in that movie. They laughed and laughed. Not gonna lie, I felt dissed. I felt like a total cotton headed ninny muggins.

Oh well…no matter. Not even total humiliation will stop me from
takin’ it back to the old school, cuz I’m an old fool, who’s so cool.
And I’m certain that one day they’ll appreciate how cool their mom is.
Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but SOMEday.
Here’s a shovel, can you dig it fool?

  1. I do the same thing! I turn up a *blast from the past* song I love and nobody will car-seat-dance along with me! Marie, if you and I ever take a road trip, we’ll tune the radio to a “flashback weekend” station and groove out! The kids can just slink down in their seats and hide!

  2. OMG you have made my night! Love it! Found you on the #LOBS party!

  3. HA HA! Keep bustin’ a move mama! Love it!

  4. Oh, Marie – I’m so glad I’m not the only one whose kids look at her like she has three heads. I will join you and Rabia on that roadtrip – there’s nothing better than jamming in the car with people who appreciate your singing and seat dancing.

  5. I just have one kid so he doesn’t have anyone to strike up a related conversation with when I do this! LOL
