I Danced In the Super Bowl Halftime Show…and Rolling Stone Hated It

A little known fact about me: I danced in the Super Bowl XXVI halftime show!
For those of you who aren’t so good with roman numerals, that was way back in 1992.
Every year at this time I get all nostalgic about it. I was in 9th grade, and it was REALLY fun!  I got to hang out with some of my best friends and hundreds of other local dancers, practicing for months. In the end we put on a truly epic show, all themed around Minnesota winters. (I mean, who doesn’t love a miserable good Minnesota winter?)  Our show featured colorfully costumed dancing beauties, a bloated and out of shape 1980 US Olympic Hockey team, past their prime figure skating icons Dorothy Hamil and Brian Boitano, pyrotechnics (only half of which actually worked), marching bands playing to a pre-recorded track, inexplicable stilt walkers, and of course….Gloria Estefan! (Because I can’t think of anything that reminds me more of winter than latin pop music.) Wanna see it for yourself? I thought so. Grab your parka, sit back and relax. Because right now I proudly give you…

(In two dazzling parts)
Okay, okay. so it was no Beyonce or U2 concert. I get that. But you have to keep in mind that was many years ago. Halftime shows back then were more about spectacle, show,…formations!
A few days ago I found out Rolling Stone Magazine had ranked all the Super Bowl Halftime shows from worst to best. Not gonna lie…I was a bit nervous when I clicked on the link. But I gathered my courage and did it anyway. I was so relieved to find out we were NOT voted the worst in history. We were only the 6th worst! I guess I’ll take it. But here’s the part that really pissed me off. They said Winter Magic was a show filled with “hideous dancing imps.” HIDEOUS DANCING IMPS?!? Really, Rolling Stone? That hurts. (You can tweet all complaints to @RobSheff at Rolling Stone, by the way.)
Oh well, the appreciation of great art really is subjective I suppose. I won’t let it get me down. It was such a fun experience. One that I always look back on with fondness at this time of year. I mean, how many people can say they danced in Super Bowl Halftime and got reviewed in Rolling Stone? Only the lucky ones, I guess. Only the lucky ones. Happy Super Bowl everybody…Enjoy this year’s halftime show!

  1. OMG this is hilarious! I cannot believe you actually danced in the Super Bowl half-time show AND I guess I forgot that they really used to be about dancing “formations!” Too funny. That was definitely too harsh of a comment but hey, for better or 6th worst – you can always say you were part of history! Be proud ๐Ÿ™‚
    Visiting from SITShareFest…

  2. That was so much fun to watch again. Thanks for sharing it with us, so we could give it our own critique. ” HIDEOUS DANCING IMPS?!? Really? Rolling Stones must not have gotten into the ‘Big’ hair. Hey, no costume mishaps, no lip sync, no technical errors. What more could you want? If MN get the Super Bowl back here maybe you’ll be asked for a curtain call? Maybe Anna will follow in her mother’s foot steps.

  3. This was fun to watch. It’s strange though because I vividly remember watching the 1993 halftime show in Tim Richter’s basement (Michael Jackson with his Free Willy song), but did not remember that you were in the 1992 show at all.

    • Seriously? You didn’t remember? Are you saying Michael Jackson made a bigger impression on you than Brian Boitano? That’s okay. Perhaps you just blocked out all of our hideous dancing imp-ishness.

  4. That is so exciting! I was born in 1992 : )

  5. How cool is that?!! But hideous dancing imps? That is so wrong…
